Year 8 - Year 8 Humanities

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Humanities is a subject that integrates the study of History, Geography, Economics and Civics and Citizenship to provide you with a learning experience that focuses on developing skills and investigating issues that are relevant to your life.

In semester one, you will explore geographic systems, landforms and rivers, mapping and contour lines and complete a field report based on an excursion to Barwon Heads.  Your history focus will be on the Middle Ages and you will investigate an aspect of daily life, a major event, an important issue or a significant person from that time.

In semester two, you will consider the role of consumers and producers, the laws of demand and supply, how Australia’s resources are used, the importance of international trade and how work patterns are changing. You will also learn about Australia’s system of government, the Constitution, Australia’s legal system and the importance of being an active and informed citizen.

 

The curriculum is built around the Victorian Curriculum

  • Geography:  Geographical Concepts and Skills; Geographical Knowledge
  • History:  Historical Concepts and Skills; Historical Knowledge
  • Economics: Resource Allocation and Making Choices; Consumer and Financial Literacy; Work and Work Futures
  • Civics and Citizenship: Law and Citizens; Government and Democracy

KEY FOCUS QUESTIONS

  • How does the past affect the present and the future?
  • How has human activity affected a local environment?
  • How does the world stay connected and why is this important?
  • Do I need to be an informed consumer?
  • What are my rights?

 

ASSESSMENT TASKS

You will be expected to complete a broad range of activities, including:  individual research tasks, oral presentations, posters, maps, tests, group work and multi-media presentations.  You will complete one common reportable learning task each term. 

RESOURCES AND EQUIPMENT

You will need to bring the following materials to every class:

  • a device to access the world wide web, Compass and to use selected Apps
  • Ring binder with loose leaf paper or an exercise book for note taking
  • Plastic pockets to store handouts and submit work
  • Pens, pencils and other stationery
