Year 8 - Year 8 English ALP

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

Year 8 ALP English will challenge you to develop into a dynamic communicator that can use language creatively, persuasively and analytically. You will be exposed to a range of literary, media and screen texts that will be relevant to your own life and also challenge you to expand your world-view.

You will develop skills in writing for creative and real life contexts. For example, the Choose Your Own Historical Adventure unit will fire your imagination as you explore historical fiction and narrative structure. You will create an epic story in the form of an interactive website. There are also opportunities to publish a variety of pieces in a writing folio and develop your analytical essay writing skills.

Throughout the year you will develop as a more confident speaker by taking a stand on issues important to you, constructing reasoned arguments and performing poetry and plays.

Challenging themes and concepts will be explored in a range of novels and films, such as the film and philosophy unit on The Truman Show, which explores reality, freedom and media influence.

TEXTS STUDIED;

  • Animal Farm by George Orwell (novel and animation)
  • Finding Grace by Alyssa Brugman (novel)
