# Year 9 - Maths

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In Year 9 all Maths classes follow the same syllabus as outlined in the AusVELS documents for the Mathematics domain. This means that we cover topics in the areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and, Statistics and Probability.

Students will explore concepts in the following topics:

- Statistics, including collecting, displaying, interpreting and analysing data.
- Probability, including the probability of various outcomes and predicting the likelihood of future events.
- Consumer Maths, including revisiting percentages, decimals and fractions in the context of everyday life and work.
- Algebra, including exploring the language of Algebra and using Algebra to solve everyday problems.
- Measurement, including exploring perimeter, area, surface area and volume of simple and composite shapes.
- Pythagoras’ Theorem & Trigonometry, including investigating the ratio between side lengths and angles in right-angled triangles.

MAIN ASSESSMENT TASKS

Students are assessed against the AusVELS standards using classroom observations, written tests and problem solving tasks. Open-ended tasks, with multiple entry levels for students of all abilities, are used to access and extend student learning. We use assessment tools to establish each student’s strengths and weaknesses so that we can provide appropriate learning activities for each of our students.
