Year 9 ALP Mathematics

In Year 9 ALP Mathematics students extend their understanding of measurement, linear equations, straight-line graphs and their applications, probability and trigonometry and applications thereof.  Students will also learn how to solve equations with two unknowns, to use index laws, working with irrational numbers, sketching parabolas, solving quadratic equations and modelling with quadratic equations.

Students will use the CAS (Computer Algebra Systems) calculator as a learning tool to enhance their understanding of the above concepts.

This subject is designed to provide access to worthwhile and challenging mathematical learning in a way that takes into account the needs and aspirations of a wide range of students. It is also designed to promote students’ awareness of the importance of mathematics in everyday life in a technological society, and confidence in making effective use of mathematical ideas, techniques and processes.

Students will engage in the following mathematical activities within the topics mentioned above:

• Apply knowledge and skills: Learning and practising mathematical algorithms, routines and techniques, and using them to find solutions to standard problems.
• Model, investigate and solve problems: The application of mathematical knowledge and skills in unfamiliar situations, including situations that require investigative, modelling or problem solving approaches.
• Use technology: The effective and appropriate use of technology to produce results, which support learning mathematics and its application in different contexts.

The Mathematics curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and, Statistics and Probability.

• Skills based tasks, for example, tests, homework sheets
• Problem solving and Modelling activities

Throughout the year students will develop knowledge based around the following key foci:

• Number and Algebra: Students solve problems involving linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations and related graphs, with and without the use of digital technology. Students substitute into formulas, find unknown values, manipulate linear algebraic expressions, expand binomial expressions and factorise and solve a variety of quadratic equations, with and without the use of digital technology. They represent linear, quadratic and exponential functions numerically, graphically and algebraically, and use them to model situations and solve practical problems.
• Measurement and Geometry – Students solve and explain surface area and volume problems relating to composite solids. They use parallel and perpendicular lines, angle and triangle properties, similarity, trigonometry and congruence to solve practical problems.
• Statistics and Probability – Students describe bivariate data where the independent variable is time and use scatter-plots generated by digital technology to investigate relationships between two continuous variables. They list outcomes for multi-step chance experiments involving independent and dependent events, and assign probabilities for these experiments.
